Owners’ comments
Visits will hopefully resume in May.
Fabulous set of ancestral stone buildings, on a large wooded lot (1.68 ha), less than 30 minutes from Montreal, 10 minutes from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
The ancestral home is large and bright, the arrangement of the rooms and the large openings make the circulation easy and the organization of functional family life by offering at the same time open areas (large living room) and more private rooms ( dining room).
The restoration of the house has been carried out with great concern for compliance with its past. Indeed, the ramps, woodwork, and floors have been restored by hand, wrought iron handles are installed on doors made by a carpenter craftsman, closets latches and windows have been restored using ancestral techniques. During the restoration, the bread oven in the basement and the "jardinière" in the dining room were kept. Everything has been meticulously maintained and is in perfect condition. Only some walls present defects due to the removal of the frames and ornaments from the last owner.
The former owners, practical people, took care to install modern electrical circuits, allowing the installation of a number of electrical outlets in each room. The electric heating is controlled in each room by an independent thermostat and the house proved to be easier to heat in the winter of 2018 than anticipated.
They also bet on the comfort of a bathroom on each floor in addition to the full bathroom upstairs. The bathroom in the basement also has an extra shower. To be honest, the upstairs bathroom dating back to the '80s had to be brought up to date. The kitchen, that was not a common feature in the 1800s is simply a wooden country style. The cabinets, a nice shade, are in perfect condition.
The electrified buildings with concrete floors are in excellent condition and could easily be converted into stables, workshops or offices.
The presence of mature trees and shrubs, the vast wooded lot, as well as access to the L'Acadie River through the forest, complete the undeniable charm of the vast property. The tranquility is assured by the absence of neighbors near the house.
Finally, the house is classified as cultural heritage, its history is extensively described on some specialized sites, including the site Ma Culture: http://www.maculture.ca/en/en/maison-joseph-roy-lorrain-sainte- married/. The Lorrains also left descriptive documents of the renovation, as much in history as in diagrams of electrical circuits and cuts of walls.
